The 1st of September was designated as the World Day of Prayer for the Care for Creation. The date has been marked by the Orthodox Church since 1989 and was in recent years taken up by the Pope also. In St Mary’s Killarney an ecumenical prayer service was held in the green space beside the church in full sunshine at 6pm, in full view of the public walking by. Not only were there representatives of the Franciscan Order, Methodists, Baptists, Anglicans and Roman Catholics amongst the group, but also a contingent from the Islamic Cultural Centre in Killarney, led by their Imam Mohammed. This was the first of what is to be an annual gathering.
