On Sunday the 17th October Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Killala was the venue for a particular, some might say unique, occasion. That morning in that place both an Installation and an Institution took place. What made the event different was that it was a husband and wife affair.
The service began with the Installation of Revd. Canon Jennifer McWhirter to the Prebendaries of Killaraght and Kilmovee, the Installation being enacted by the Dean of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, Very Revd Alistair Grimason.

Immediately after this came the Institution of The Venerable Stephen McWhirter, Canon Jen’s husband, to the Killala element of the newly formed Cure of Killala Group of Parishes. Bishop Rooke performed the Institution and also preached.
Then to cap it all off, a presentation was made to Canon Jen by Revd Clive Moore, albeit belatedly owing to Covid restrictions earlier in the year, as a ‘Thank You’ for all her work during her time as Priest in Charge of Killala before her move to be Incumbent of Aughaval Parish where she now serves.
All in all, this was a family occasion, a joyous family occasion. A unique occasion.
