Glencolmcille is best known as a coastal village in south Donegal, but there is also a Glencolmcille South, a scenic valley in the Burren region of County Clare.
Following the Feast Day of St Columcille on the 9th of June, we are organising a c. 2-hour morning walk on Saturday 27th June 2026 along a scenic route to the ruins of a monastic enclosure attributed to our Patron Saint Columba. We will also stop at Tobar Colmcille (St Colmcille’s well).
St Columba, known in Irish as Colm Cille meaning ‘Dove of the Church’, is associated with founding important monastic centres in Derry, Durrow and Kells. It is said that he came to visit Saint Enda on Inis Mór (Aran Islands) circa 560AD before he established a community on Iona, Scotland in 563AD.
Glencolumcille, County Clare was a distinct parish in medieval times and is now within the parish of Carron.
Our day will commence at 10am with all gathering at Cassidy’s Pub and Restaurant, Carron (V95 EK65).
Note: This mini pilgrimage walk, whilst on mostly sound footing, has one section that is quite steep, so please be aware of this before booking.
What to bring:
Comfortable walking footwear
Walking sticks
Waterproof gear
Bottled water
Sunscreen
Numbers are limited so early booking is advised.
Be inspired as we look forward to walking, talking, reflecting and reconnecting with our Celtic Christianity.
