A Historic Celebration with Bishop Michael Burrows
On Sunday, 31st August 2025, the congregation of St Flannan’s Cathedral in Killaloe gathered for a remarkable Festival Eucharist, commemorating a significant milestone: 800 years since the cathedral’s consecration in 1225. The cathedral was full as this momentous occasion drew parishioners, local residents, and visitors from across the region, all united in celebration and reflection within the ancient cathedral’s hallowed walls.
The service was presided over by The Right Revd Michael Burrows, Bishop of Tuam, Limerick, and Killaloe, who also delivered the sermon. Bishop Burrows spoke with warmth and insight, inviting those present to consider the cathedral’s enduring presence in Limerick’s spiritual and cultural life. His words highlighted the cathedral’s role as both a place of worship and a symbol of resilience and hope across the centuries. Bishop Michael was joined by two former Bishops of Limerick and Killaloe, Bishop Trevor Williams and Bishop Kenneth Kearon.
The liturgy was marked by traditional Anglican hymns, including a hymn, the words of which were especially composed for the occasion by the Dean, the Very Revd Richard Marsh. The singing was supported by a joint choir made up of the Killaloe Male Voice Choir and Gunas directed by Anne Cullen, The Festival included heartfelt prayers, and moments of quiet contemplation, all set within the stunning architecture the main structure, which as Bishop Michael mentioned in his sermon, has remained much as it was in 1225. The Festival Eucharist not only honoured the past but also looked forward, reaffirming St Flannan’s mission in the heart of the city for generations to come.
During the service, the Icon of St Flannan was dedicated by Bishop Michael and Dean Richard. This Icon had been painted by Ian Knowles, the former Director of the Bethlehem Icon School, in his studio in Northern Italy .
As the service concluded, there was a profound sense of gratitude and joy, as the cathedral community celebrated both their shared history and their future together as they enjoyed refreshments by the West Door The 800th anniversary of St Flannan’s Cathedral stands as a testament to the enduring faith and dedication of all who have passed through its doors since its consecration eight centuries ago.
